The core function of an air compressor in drilling is to generate high-pressure, high-flow compressed air that isto the bottom of the borehole at high speed through the center of the drill pipe or through the side wall, instantly carrying broken rock fragments (cuttings) up through the annular space and out of the wellhead. This process is called "air lift cuttings removal" or "air reverse circulation".

Air compressors not only remove cuttings, but also cool and lubricate the drill bit, drive DTH hammers to impact rock at high frequency, maintain wellbore stability to prevent collapse, and after water well completion, "blow" out fine particles from aquifer fractures to increase water yield and extend water well service life.
